Ultimate Cavity Prevention and Optimal Oral Health
Cavities form as a result of bacteria and plaque produced from the sugar contained in the foods and drinks we consume. Once the sticky film of plaque covers the teeth, acids begin to erode the tooth enamel, eventually forming a cavity.
Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and using interdental cleaning tools (floss and floss sticks) helps remove bacteria-forming debris. Over time, however, plaque can settle in hard to reach places—the crevices and pits of the tooth—increasing the opportunity for cavities to develop.
At Newtown Dentistry, our board-certified, highly-experienced dentists have several cavity-fighting resources at their disposal. And, the following protocols for reducing the risk of cavities are available to children and adults (depending on what your dentist recommends will work best for you)!
- CariScreen Caries Susceptibility Test
The CariScreen Meter provides a score between 0 and 9,999 for the risk of dental caries. This simple bacterial test for assessing the risk of tooth decay involves your dentist swabbing small amounts of plaque from your teeth, combined with a special bioluminescence reagent (embedded in the swab). The test is completely pain-free and done within one minute. Your dentist will be able to give you an immediate score—anything under 1,500 is in positive range.
- Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Based on clinical trials, this colorless liquid containing fluoride and silver ions, prevents cavity growth in 70% to 90% of treated teeth. Our dentists are excited to offer SDF treatments during your child’s routine checkups. The application is quick and painless. Teeth treated with silver diamine fluoride are monitored every six months to ensure decay has not progressed.
Sealants are particularly helpful in preventing cavities from forming in the back of the teeth. Your dentist applies the sealant coating to the deep pockets and fissures of the molars. Once solidified, sealants help prevent 80% of cavities from developing, according to the CDC.
You may be familiar with Xylitol as a sweetener used in sugar-free chewing gums or as a sugar substitute found in certain drinks and foods. But, have you heard of Xylitol in terms of promoting healthy teeth? Xylitol naturally derives from many fruits and vegetables (berries, plums, lettuce, mushrooms).
Studies have shown that appropriate daily consumption of Xylitol offers a host of health benefits that also directly impact positive oral health, which include:
- Helps prevent tooth decay
- Reduces plaque formation on teeth
- Blocks the acids that demineralize tooth enamel
- Assists in the repair of damaged enamel
- Halts the growth of specific types of acid-producing bacteria linked to tooth decay
- Aids in reducing gingival inflammation
- Relieves dry mouth
In addition, Xylitol is safe for all ages in amounts needed for dental benefits.
