How Icon Addresses Treatment of White Spot Lesions

While white spot lesions (WSLs) can be caused by poor oral hygiene, there are additional reasons why these “spots” appear. Often, people who have undergone orthodontic treatment (children in particular) will develop WSLs.The lesions, identified by their white, chalky, and/or opaque appearance on tooth surfaces, develop as a result of demineralization and remineralization of the tooth enamel. In addition to poor oral hygiene, white spots can be caused by:

  • Presence (or absence) of fluoridation areas
  • Changes in salivary flow
  • Congenital hypo-calcified enamel lesions

Apart from veneers and similar cosmetic dentistry options, WSLs cannot be removed from the enamel surface without the aid of professional treatment. And, this is precisely where Icon comes in! Icon is a resin that can be applied directly to the teeth.

When administering Icon treatment, your dentist cleans the teeth with a polish paste, followed by a good rinse. A rubber dam is placed to help protect the soft tissues of the mouth while also keeping the application area dry. The entire process typically only takes two to three minutes.

Benefits of Icon

In addition to removing white spots from the teeth, studies have demonstrated that Icon offers long-lasting results. WSLs can remain absent for anywhere between two to four years following treatment.

Additionally, research shows few to no side effects from Icon. And, again, this treatment option is minimally invasive, with long-term results—a beautiful smile that will last for years to come!
