Routine Teeth Cleaning

Cavity prevention is one of the highest priorities at Newtown Dentistry. We’ve helped thousands of kids and adults avoid cavities by providing a comprehensive teeth cleaning every six months. A complete, regular teeth cleaning has a number of added benefits, too.

Benefits of Regular Teeth Cleaning

Beyond the great feeling of a freshly cleaned mouth, a teeth cleaning at Newtown adds to your long-term oral health and, by extension, your overall health. Some of the advantages of our teeth cleanings include:

Preventing Cavities: Cavities form as a result of bacteria and plaque produced from the sugar contained in the foods and drinks we consume. Routinely eliminating plaque buildup stops cavities from forming.

Preventing Gum Disease: This common disease affects gum tissue and can jeopardize the bones holding your teeth in place. Early and regular removal of tartar and plaque minimizes the risk of gum disease.

Promoting Overall Health: The mouth is a reflection of your general health. Studies have shown links between oral health and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and more. Regular dental cleanings keep up your oral health and overall health.

Maintaining a Radiant Smile: Regular wear, coupled with stains from drinks like tea or coffee, can reduce our teeth’s natural sheen. Regular cleanings restore this, ensuring you a bright, confident smile.

Professional Teeth Cleaning Procedures

At Newtown, our dental cleaning process includes a number of important steps that build on the previous, leading to high-quality, long-term oral hygiene.

  1. Physical Examination
Purpose: Provides an overall understanding of your oral status, helping us target areas of concern with appropriate procedures.
Process: With a dental mirror in hand, your dentist will carefully examine your entire mouth. This visual inspection, with the help of X-rays, helps us pinpoint any issues, from cavities to gum inflammation.
  2. Removal of Plaque and Tartar
Purpose: Get rid of films that can start to erode your teeth’s enamel and form cavities.
Process: Our highly trained hygienists use special tools to zero in on every tooth, especially the areas close to the gum line and in between your teeth.
  3. Grainy Toothpaste Polishing
Purpose: Made with pumice, refines the cleaning results for a renewed shine.
Process: Your hygienist uses a combination of a high-powered motorized brush and a special toothpaste to ensure each tooth is deeply cleaned and gets a shiny finish.
  4. Careful Flossing
Purpose: Addresses areas in between your teeth and areas brushing misses.
Process: Hygienists are trained to get the floss in between every tooth, making sure that no debris remains.
  5. Refreshing Rinse
Purpose: Cleanses and revitalizes the mouth after the cleaning.
Process: We use a fluoride-infused rinse to get rid of any final traces of debris and help further prevent any tooth decay that can cause cavities.
  6. Fluoride Treatment
Purpose: Acts as a shield, strengthening teeth against potential decay.
Process: Depending on individual needs, fluoride—as a gel or foam—may be applied, guarding teeth for a longer period of time.

Additional Cavity Prevention Tools and Services

Our board-certified, highly experienced dentists also have a number of cavity-fighting tools and procedures that can further reduce your risk of cavities. Available to children and adults, your dentist can recommend the one that will work best for you. All of these services can be done as a part of your regular dental cleaning and checkup. They do not require a separate appointment.

  1. CariScreen Caries Susceptibility Test
The CariScreen Meter provides a score for your risk of dental cavities. This simple pain-free bacterial test involves your dentist swabbing small amounts of plaque from your teeth, combined with a special bioluminescence reagent (embedded in the swab). The test is done within one minute.
  2. Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
This colorless liquid containing fluoride and silver ions prevents cavity growth in 70% to 90% of treated teeth. The application is quick and painless. Teeth treated with silver diamine fluoride are checked every six months to ensure any decay remains in check.
  3. Sealants
Sealants are particularly useful in preventing cavities from forming in the back of the teeth, where plaque tends to build up. Your dentist applies the sealant coating to the deep pockets and fissures of your back molars. Sealants help prevent 80% of cavities from developing.
  4. Xylitol
More than just a sweetener, Xylitol plays an important role in proactive oral health. Found in certain fruits and vegetables, regular amounts can help stop tooth decay and plaque formation, aid in enamel repair, and counteract harmful bacteria. It is safe for both children and adults.

At Newtown Dentistry, we understand how important your oral health is to you and your family’s overall health. We continue to stay ahead of the latest technologies and services in diagnostics—like digital X-rays, treatments like laser dentistry, and cavity preventions to ensure your family is getting the top dental care it can. We have designed separate facilities for adults, children, and orthodontics—conveniently located in one building. Parents and children can make appointments at the same time, making it easy for you to keep up with the whole family’s preventive health.
